The Author

Dr. Ilse-Rose Warg was born in Germany in 1936, experiencing the Third Reich, WWII, and the Occupation. After attending the Medau Schule, she earned her Gymnastics and Sports certificate from Bavaria’s Sportakademie Grünwald. She became an exchange teacher in Bethlehem, PA, where she met her future husband, Jamison B. Warg. They married, moved permanently to the US, and adopted two children. She later earned her PhD in German literature, language, philosophy and culture. After teaching at various universities, she retired in 2016. She currently lives with her husband and dog, and is active in her local community and church.
Dr. Ilse-Rose Warg ( née Höfer) was born in Gera/ Thuringia. She grew up during the turbulent times of the Nazi regime, WWII and its aftermath. She received her teaching degree
at the Medau-Schule via the Bavarian Sportacademy Grünwald and taught in Zurich, Switzerland. After two years as exchange teacher (a time limit in the late 50th and early 60th) in Bethlehem, PA, she had to return to Germany before she could immigrate to the USA. She and her husband, Jamison B. Warg, adopted two children, after she received her MA from the Penn State University. in 1972 she became an American citizen. She reentered the university to pursue her doctor’s degree, after her children had reached their high school age. During her study time she worked as a research- and teaching assistant. She introduced her students to the German language, literature and history. Her enthusiasm in teaching earned her rewards and honors from The Pennsylvania State and Central Michigan Universities. She served as the president of Delta Phi Alpha and became a member of Phi Kappa Phi. In 2000, she taught at the Franciscan University in Steubenville and again at the Penn State University Altoona until 2016, when she retired from teaching. Serves at the Angle Soap pantry that is connected to the local food bank and enjoys singing in the choir of her church.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout her career, she has been honored with several prestigious awards and recognitions. She is a proud member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society and was awarded a fellowship from the Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies to contribute as a research assistant on the Yearbook of Comparative Criticism project at University Park, Pennsylvania. Her leadership skills were recognized when she served as President of Delta Phi Alpha, the German Honorary Society. Additionally, she received the Outstanding Woman Award from the Pan-Hellenic Council at Penn State University and was named one of the Achieving Women of Penn State by the university's Commission for Women. At Penn State Altoona, she was honored with the Outstanding Lecturer Award and later promoted to Senior Instructor in German, marking a significant milestone in her academic career.
